Attack of the Night Crawlers

It had been a day since Me and my Mom had been attacked. Those creatures were still out there. Still on their journey to the town we lived in.

“Mom,” I asked. “What were those creatures that attacked us?”

“Kevin, those creatures are called night crawlers.” Mom replied. “They are large, monsters that come out every year, at night, on October 31st.”

“Why don’t they stay here when they come out?”

“Its the book.”

“What book?” I asked.

“The one in your bag. We read the books story to the Night Crawlers to put them back to sleep.”

I had no idea that monsters came out every year and we had a book that put them back to sleep. It all seemed unreal, like super heroes and villains.

“But the night crawlers took the book from us.” Mom continued.

“They know that without the book, they won’t be trapped inside it. I’ve been reading you the story every time you go to sleep so you could memorize it, but you couldn’t figure it out. So we need to get the book back so that we can-“

Mom didn’t finish her sentence. A huge night crawler had stomped on the car’s engine. We were almost home, but the ugly thing had to stop us. The monster then kicked the car off the road. We both screamed. The car rumbled down into a ditch. I turned to the town we were going back to. I saw huge monsters destroying buildings and vehicles. I saw a tree taken from its trunk. I saw another night crawler smashing a fast food restaurant. Police officers tried stopping the monsters, but they were no match for the huge, creepy night crawlers.

I felt the car turn on its roof. The night crawler had kicked the car again. It growled as it reached in to grab me. I screamed again. I thought I was going to be eaten alive, but Mom pulled out a small, folding knife and stabbed it into the monster’s huge hand. The night crawler groaned and took his hand out of the car.

“Where did you get that from?” I asked confused.

“No time to explain. Just run!”

She didn’t have to tell me twice. I bolted out the car and ran to the town. I hid behind a small, grey house. I had my eyes locked on the car I was just in. The night crawler had walked away. I saw mom crawling out of the car. Was she hurt? I Had a bunch of other questions bouncing in my head. Why were these creatures trying to hurt us? Where is that book? And how is it going to help stop them? I was pulled out of my thoughts when I heard a gun shot. I turned and saw a police officer shooting down a night crawler.

The bullets penetrated through the monster’s body. It fell to the ground with a loud thud. But then another night crawler came out and grabbed the policeman. He screamed. I saw him trying to beat the monster with his baton, but the night crawler just growled and threw him into a tree. I gasped. The poor man had been pushed into a large, sharp tree branch. I started to cry. Everyone was going to die because of me. If only I had just read the story to those dumb creatures. Maybe then we would all be safe and sound. But I stopped crying when I heard footsteps.

Huge loud footsteps slowly creeping from behind. I turned and saw. Another huge night crawler. “Oh great.” I mumbled. This night crawler seemed to be the biggest. Like he was the biggest in Height, the biggest in size, and probably the biggest in weight. I could see this one also had strange armour made from what seemed to be rocks and wood. But something caught my eye. My eyes locked on an ancient book. The book! The monster snarled and growled.

“You wont be getting this today.” He said in a monsterous voice.

It sounded more like vomiting than talking though.

“But I need that book.” I said.

“Its the only way to put you guys back to sl-“

“You are not getting this book back!” The monster screamed.

“No!”

The monster slowly started ripping the book down the middle, but then I saw a rocket fly into the night crawler’s foot. It groaned and dropped the book to the ground. The monster fell down with it. I turned and saw another officer with a large weapon. This one looked different, though. He had a huge armored helmet unlike the other officers. He had lots of weapons, and he was covered with powerful armor.

“Get out of here!” He shouted.

I ran and grabbed the book.

“No!” The monster roared.

I ran as fast as I could, away from that huge beast. I had a chance at saving our town, but did I?
